Behaviour Support Program

The outdoor environment can be used constructively to address the needs of target groups and individuals.

The behaviour of young people is a complex equation of need and recognition.  Using the outdoors as the setting and outdoor activities as a vehicle, the behaviour support program is aimed at targeting 'specific behaviour'.

Over the course of a worked program, adventurous activities will be used as the tool to place young people into reflective and challenging situations.  The education begins with their responses and attitudes to adventure or misadventure.

A large part of this program is focused on transactional analysis of adult: child, often the trigger for confrontation and non- conformance at school.

This programme will be very much directed by the school classroom teacher and the Senco, with additional support from external agencies if required.  Teaching Assistants directly assigned to statemented children will be expected to be an integral part of this process.  This will ensure monitoring and feedback over the school week.

Purpose
  • Address long term non-conformance/compliance.
  • Offer an external reward each week.
  • A chance to experience and recruit new skills.
  • Ultimately, lead to improved behaviour in the school environment.

Target Group
With school support it is proposed that a target group of up to 8 young people is worked with over the course of a term, for a morning or afternoon.
